With an estimated 3,400 people living on the street in 2022, on Give Miami Day Camillus House wants to inspire you to help us serve Miami-Dade’s homeless. Since the pandemic began, life became more difficult for many Miamians, especially for homeless people. Now, Miami-Dade’s affordable housing crisis threatens to expand the already sizeable homeless population. One resident, receiving services and living at one of our South Dade campus’s said, “housing is important to work on getting out of the situation you find yourself in, when you hit rock bottom, like I did.” For formerly homeless Billy, he credits Camillus House for saving his life. After becoming addicted to medications meant to ease pain from back surgery, he found himself spiraling out of control as he also suffers from mental illness. He had been fighting on his own since 2014, because “I had nothing and didn’t know places existed that really cared,” said Billy.
The safety and protection he found at Camillus House made him realize “the importance of having a home to lay down my head so I could begin to build my self-esteem and didn’t have to concentrate on finding shelter every night.”
Like so many others seeking refuge with us, Billy could only be helped with generous donor support who by which we can offer rehabilitative services and many other life skills to all. Please help us continue the programming and outreach that reshapes lives so individuals may grow to be self-sufficient and move beyond homelessness.
Today, Billy is amazed at the love and inspiration he receives from Camillus House and his “angel” case manager.
