CHYL (Camillus House Young Leaders)

Camillus House has provided humanitarian services to persons who are poor and homeless in Miami-Dade County, Florida since 1960, and has grown steadily over the years from a small soup kitchen into a full service center.

Camillus’ goal is to reach the hardest-to-reach and poorest members of our community, giving them the hope and support they need to begin the long, difficult transition to a new life and self-sufficiency.


Who are CHYL?

CHYL is a diverse group of individuals who share a desire to make a difference in the lives of the men, women and children served by Camillus House. Members support Camillus House by volunteering their time, talents and energy promoting the organization’s mission by raising awareness and funds through various special events and volunteer activities.


CHYL Board

Sarah M. Weintraub, President & Chair

Sarah M. Weintraub serves as the President & Chair of the Camillus House Young Leaders (CHYL) Board. In this capacity, she oversees the governance of the CHYL board, development of the CHYL strategic plan and execution of project and fundraising efforts. Sarah acts as a liaison between the CHYL board and Camillus Board of Directors and ensures alignment of CHYL initiatives with organizational priorities. Sarah has been a long time supporter of Camillus House & Camillus Health Concern and also sits on the Womens Committee of Camillus House.

Sarah's professional work has focused on the healthcare industry in both public health and business roles. Sarah is the Director of Corporate Development for Baptist Health South Florida, the largest faith-based, not-for-profit healthcare organization in the region. She is responsible for developing and executing new non-traditional strategies for system revenue growth, enhanced margin and competitive advantage for the health system. Prior to joining Baptist Health, Sarah held positions in research and strategy for Sapoznik Insurance & Associates and the Department of HIV Prevention Services through Camillus Health Concern. In 2007 and 2008 Sarah lived and worked in Kenya assisting in antiretrovirogy (ARV) and infectious disease research, as well as furthering HIV Voluntary Counseling & Testing (VCT) initiatives in rural slum areas.

Sarah is an activist for public health causes, including initiatives to improve global access to healthcare and infectious disease prevention. She has held volunteer roles with Camillus Health Concern, AIDS Relief Africa, Peer Health Exchange, and Medical Missions for Children. She is a 'Big Sister' with Big Brothers Big sisters of Miami and a member of Young Philanthropists of Baptist Health (YPBH). 

Sarah is a graduate of Boston College with a B.A. in Health Communication and has completed certificate coursework in Strategic Management from Harvard University. She is an alumna of Ransom Everglades Preparatory School and an active member of the American Statistical Association (ASA).

Christina Michelena, Vice Chair

Christina Michelena serves as the Vice Chair of the Camillus House Young Leaders (CHYL) Board. In this capacity, she works closely with the President & Chair to provide leadership to the CHYL board and collaborates in the development of CHYL project and fundraising goals. Christina spearheads the planning of CHYL events and leads coordination and recruitment efforts for CHYL members and volunteer initiatives.

Christina is a Senior Financial Analyst at Open English, one of the most successful start-ups in Miami. Open English is an online language school that has taught English to 100,000 students in more than 40 countries since 2006. Christina previously held positions in the Banking Industry in both New York City and Washington DC.

Christina is a graduate of The George Washington University with a degree in Economics and Business Administration, and an alumna of Ransom Everglades, class of 2005.  

Alex Saiz, Secretary

Alex Saiz serves as the Secretary of the Camillus House Young Leaders (CHYL) Board. In this role, Alex helps lead communication with the CHYL Board and Committee chairs, facilitation of meetings and maintenance of CHYL records.

Alex is an attorney with the Office of the Public Defender in Miami-Dade County, one of the largest public interest law offices in the country. Besides representing clients in criminal trials, Alex is also an attorney in the office’s cutting edge Padilla Immigration Program.  He has advised thousands of clients on immigration issues while training hundreds of attorneys on the ever-changing landscape of criminal immigration.

Alex is a dedicated advocate for indigent defense. Beyond his work as a public defender, he volunteers with pro bono efforts through the Cuban American Bar Association, the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Public Defender’s Office Redemption Workshops. Since 2014, he has served on the City of Miami Charter Reform Committee, where he analyzes and suggests changes to the charter that forms the City of Miami. He has been an active volunteer with Habitat For Humanity, Special Olympics of Miami and Redland Migrants Christmas Drive.

Alex is a graduate of Florida International University with B.A. degrees in International Relations and Political Science.  He is a graduate of the American University Washington College of Law where he received his Juris Doctorate.

Marcos Alvarez, Treasurer

Marcos Alvarez is the treasurer of the Camillus House Young Leaders (CHYL) Board. He is responsible for reporting at each board meeting, assisting in the preparation of the budget, and helping develop fundraising plans. He is also responsible for making financial information available to board members and the public.

Marcos’ professional background has focused on the accounting industry, in both public and private accounting roles.  He is an Audit Manager at the public accounting firm, Perez-Abreu, Aguerrebere, Sueiro & Torres, P.L. (PAAST). Marcos has extensive experience in Bank Secrecy Act/Anti-Money Laundering compliance audits, accounting assurance, forensic accounting and litigation support. He manages, mentors and trains a team of auditors in addition to overseeing fieldwork for auditors. Prior to joining PAAST, he worked in private accounting for a local communications company. 

Marcos graduated with honors from the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Business Administration. In 2013, he received his FIBA AMLA Certification. He is a member of the AICPA and FICPA, and serves as President of the Cuban-American Certified Public Accountants Association and its Foundation.

What time commitment is involved in joining?

Members can participate as much or as little as desired. You can support CHYL simply by attending events. Members wishing to get more involved in volunteering and/or planning activities are welcome and have many opportunities to do so. We can also provide a way for your company to get involved.
