Emergency Housing is temporary housing provided for a period of up to 90 days, depending upon the program and the needs of the client.
This type of housing provides persons who are homeless with an immediate place to get off the streets, and also serves as an entry point into the countywide “continuum of care.” It is here that clients' needs are assessed, including the need for substance abuse treatment, mental health services, employment assistance and other help. Depending upon the individual needs and motivation of the client, he/she may then be placed into transitional housing or treatment program.
Camillus Emergency Shelter
The emergency shelter, located at 1603 NW 7th Avenue in Miami's hospital district, encompasses a total of 32 beds for adult males in a dormitory-style facility. These include:
• Beds for case management/shelter, for individuals whose needs are being met while they transition to longer-stay housing.
• Beds used as “respite beds” for Camillus Health Concern patients who are not sick enough to be admitted to the hospital, but require bed rest in order to recover from illness.
The Camillus Courtyard program provides 180 persons who are homeless with a safe place to sleep, as well as food, clothing, medical care, security services and pathways into housing, treatment and job placement to break the cycle of homelessness.
Beckham Hall Emergency Shelter
Beckham Hall — located at 2735 NW 10th Avenue, Miami — includes 88 beds for adult men.
Clients may stay for up to 90 days, during which time they receive case management and employment counseling services. The program provides clients with a place to live and receive supportive services while they find employment and earn enough money to move back out on their own.
