Entry Phase

The Entry Phase is designed to stabilize clients post-detoxification and/or coming off the streets, normalize routines, and begin an introduction to recovery. Basic needs are provided for, and medical and outstanding legal issues are addressed. A comprehensive orientation takes place during the first week, followed by a second orientation with Phase II clients, where the upper-phase clients offer encouragement, support, and tips to help the new clients “stick and stay”.

A prolonged assessment of the client’s multiple needs is undertaken. The client works with his Counselor to identify strengths, needs, abilities, and preferences, and develop a treatment plan that is reviewed monthly. In addition, clients attend the following on a weekly basis: five in-house NA/AA meetings; house meetings; five half-hour morning meditation/discussion group sessions; one pyschoeducational group; and one therapy group. At this phase of treatment, the methods and approaches utilized are reality therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational counseling, and self help groups.

Clients also begin the work program, where they are assigned to various jobs within the Camillus House organization. The work therapy aspect of the program enables clients to “give back” while also learning new skills, taking pride in their work, and staying focused. Clients also receive a comprehensive health physical exam through Camillus Health Concern, including screening for sexually transmitted diseases, and are provided with appropriate follow-up care.
