The Board of Directors of Camillus House has approved the selection of Coastal Construction as the general contractor for Phase 1 of its New Camillus House Center, as well as for the Shepherd’s Court development.

Coastal Construction, a Miami-based company, was one of five South Florida contracting firms that participated in a competitive bidding process for the $50 million project. The other firms include Arellano Construction Company, Beauchamp Construction, Current Builders and Stiles Construction. Phase 1 includes the behavioral health treatment and residential facilities, the dining hall and Café, the parking garage, and an outdoor courtyard for persons not ready or able to live inside.

“We are honored to be so blessed as to have had such high quality General Contractors bidding on the project,” explained Tony Cabrera, Camillus House Board Member and Chair of the Construction Committee. “Ultimately, the decision was made based on what we felt was in the best interest of Camillus House. While every contractor was clearly qualified to do the job, it was Coastal Construction who offered the best overall pricing and warranty package. We are excited to be working with them.”

The New Camillus House Center is located at 1603 Northwest Seventh Avenue, and will feature six buildings, including residential facilities for a total of 260 individuals who are chronically homeless. The center will provide a wide range of social services and clinical treatment programs. It will increase emergency, transitional and permanent supported housing, and expand residential treatment and emergency housing to include women and Spanish-speaking individuals. The new center also will include a kennel to serve the needs of individuals who are homeless with pets. Camillus is also excited to incorporate green building design and sustainability practices and is seeking LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for the entire campus.

A seventh building consisting of 80 units of affordable housing apartments, known as Shepherd’s Court, will be built on the same site, also by Coastal Construction. Shepherd’s Court is being developed by Biscayne Housing Group with funding from the Florida Housing Finance Corporation.
